I created a second blog last month, for commenting about films, books, TV and fandom-type things that interest me. It's an occasional thing - I don't expect to update it more than a few times a month, necessarily. (I've got a post half written right now on the latest Stephanie Plum novel - hoping to finish it this week. The holidays threw me a bit.)

I'm also planning a re-watch of Fringe starting next week, and will probably blog my way through that, not every episode, but I think it might be interesting to look at the whole story from the perspective of where it ends up.

Anyway...I swear not all the posts will be on Bones (right now, there's a Hobbit post and a post on awards season as well as, yes, two on Bones. Can't help it.)

But the weird thing in my life right now is that the one I wrote on Bones S9 pickup...sort of went viral in the fandom, being commented on by the writers and cast on Twitter, etc. It's been viewed about 3500 times in two days, which is really cool...and sort of bizarre at the same time.

Anyway...not much there yet, but for the curious:

Eighth year in a row for this. Yikes!

Best moments, in no particular order:

1. Starting the year with Bit's birth (Jan 16) and ending it with BZ's (Dec 15)
2. The Great April Road Trip with [personal profile] readerjane and [personal profile] stop_thinking (Aranhe) to see KoT. (It's always the disasters that are the most memorable - in this case, getting lost in Austin.)
3. All the fun of my 50th birthday, particularly the fics organized by Natesmama. (Oh, and Hart's tweet!)
4. Finding out that a friend who'd not been given very good odds is now cancer-free.
5. The Hobbit - I don't have as much money as I did ten years ago, and so can't see it as many times as I did its predecessors, but I really love this film - for many of the same reasons.
6. Winning a Bones poster from Fox on the day of the S8 premiere. (Yeah, I know it's dumb, but it's a really fun memory!)

Worst moments:

1. The seventeen days my brother-in-law spent in the hospital after back surgery; the fact that it didn't correct the problem is even worse.
2. All the associated stress of migrating server platforms at work (six weeks of nearly constant problem-solving, still not completely resolved.)

You know, I really can't think of any others. Oldest Nephew's health is still dicey, but he's yet with us; despite the stress and inadequate hours, I still like my job. I'm quite blessed to have many, many more things I could have listed in the 'best' column than in the 'worst.'

Biggest Accomplishments:

1. Another good year at work. We're still struggling with the migration fall-out, but my boss makes a point of telling me she's more than pleased with me, and I got a good-sized (relative to where I work!) bonus a few weeks ago to support that. (We don't get merit raises, but do get end-of-year bonuses based on our evaluations, and I was in the top tier.)

2. Some writing projects I'm pleased with. Not what I wanted, precisely, but accomplishments none the less.

Looking ahead:

I'm rethinking how I approach goals. There are things I want to do, but writing them down in January doesn't seem to have magically resulted in a completed novel nor weight loss. (Hah!)

So this year, I'm thinking more along the lines of some very specific things I can do that will hopefully lay a groundwork for accomplishing more:

1. I want to do something physical every day - whether it's walking for a few minutes in the morning, or playing a Wii game.
2. I want to be more mindful of what I eat. That's all - just get in the habit of asking, 'do I really want this? Why?'
3. I want to write, every day, even if only for a few minutes. I read through this 'resolutions for writers' post yesterday, and like some of these ideas, very much:

So that's it for me for 2012, looking forward to 2013. I hope the year has more blessings than sorrow, for all of us.

...or a blizzard, rather.

One of the quotes I liked was from a weather guy who described it as a 'low-end blizzard' before noting that's like a small Tyrannosaurus rex. It stopped snowing about 3PM, meaning things should be fairly good for driving to work tomorrow, but for the bulk of the day the county where I work was under a restriction (only emergency vehicles allowed on the roads) so my boss won't have any 2nd thoughts about whether she did the right thing in closing.

And now, there's only two days left of the week before the weekend. That works, too.

I'll probably change my mind when I'm wading through a mess of catch-up tomorrow, but right now, I feel ready to go back. I've enjoyed the time off (today, I watched TV (Fringe, Dr. Who, Bones, Warehouse 13), made a pork roast, and set up the sound bar I got Nephew for Christmas.)

Now thinking I'll go to bed and read some more of the most recent Stephanie Plum novel. At this point, I'm slogging through it more to see just how bored I can be than anything else. And that's a very depressing thing to be true of a series I once enjoyed a great deal. Erg.

Oy. I'm starting my New Year's musings early, and one of the things I want to do differently in 2013 is update here more often. Since I've said that before, we'll just skip to the next step.

Somewhere along, oh, late August, my life took a turn for the insane due to family medical issues and work overload. (For those who can appreciate it, we migrated the library data from a Unix server to Windows virtual server in October, and are still putting the pieces back together.) Having spent October pre-planning what I wanted to write during NaNo...November simply evaporated. (If you see it, tell it I miss it.) I didn't even try to actually write, because by the time the calendar said it was Nov. 1st, I understood that I wasn't going to have the time or energy to do anything but keep my head above water for the foreseeable future.

On the plus side, I still have all those ideas and notes.

December was largely more of the same, with very little down-time and by last week, I was making (only half-hearted) jokes about not giving in to the impulse to stab people, from my co-worker who talks incessantly about what he's doing, to people in the Bones fandom (some of whom admittedly deserve to be stabbed, or at least permanently gagged) to various family members.

This is not to say that only bad stuff has happened- not at all! Some of the things which have contributed to the overall insanity have been very good indeed, like the birth last Saturday of my newest great-niece. (My sister now has four grandkids, three of them born in the last two years. Consensus seems to be 'we're done for a while, now.' LOL.)

(It's a measure of how insane things have been, though, that The Hobbit had been out for TWO WHOLE DAYS before I saw it, and I've still only seen it once. Since I saw both TTT and ROTK three times on opening day, this is rather disconcerting. It's amazing the world didn't actually end.)

Fortunately, I'd taken this whole week as vacation, and while Monday and Tuesday were frantic, Wed-Thursday were badly needed chill days. I've done some stuff for Christmas (wrapped, baked) but mostly watched stuff on TV, read, wrote, and caught up with various other things of priority.

And now, I must make a grocery list, take a shower, and prepare to go back out into The World. I hope all is well for all of you in LJ/DW. I'm determined to re-order life a bit heading into 2013, and shall be around here more often. (Threat? Promise?)

I'm re-reading a recent-ish JD Robb right now, and was laughing out loud in the break room at one scene in particular. I love Eve and Peabody and their conversations, so decided to share:

No visual (obviously) but possibly NSFW in spite of that: )

So it turns out that what I had was the DW code readerjane sent me, oh, last summer sometime but which I'd never done anything with.

Have now created the account - yay, me.

Next on the list is to backup LJ here and arrange the cross-posting to LJ.
